How to change your name on your Indian Passport? – Answered

Changing your name on your Indian passport is an easy and successful step if done correctly. It is done due to several reasons like marriage, court order and printing error among others. The process of changing the name on your Indian passport is straightforward. However, the process is time consuming and may involve several visits to the relevant Indian embassy or Indian consulate. You may also be required to pay a certain fee for changing your name on your passport.

Steps

Step 1

The first step that you need to do is to get all the legal documents that show the new name that you are using. Examples of such documents include marriage certificate, court orders of name , Gazette Notification and etc. Without these legal documents, you cannot change the name on your Indian passport. Sometimes the legal documents may be in a different language apart from English for Indians living abroad. This will require the original documents and a certified translation when being submitted.

Step 3

The second step is to determine the correct document to fill based on your situation. Many people have different reasons for changing their names on their passports. Examples are like mistake on the original passport, change of marital status among many other reasons. There are different forms available based on your reason. The time in which you were issued your current passport will also determine the form to fill. Make sure that you fill in all the relevant information on the form so that the process of issuing you with a new passport is smooth. The forms can be downloaded from the Indian embassy’s website. You can also personally visit the Indian embassy to get the forms. If you are living in India, you can visit the ministry of external affairs offices in India to get the forms. Remember to fill in the new name you would like to be put in the new passport.

Step 3

The next thing is to get new passport photos. This is because this is a requirement for passport name change. There are strict rules and requirements for passport photos. Any fault in the passport photos you submit may cause the process to take longer than usual. You should therefore purchase the passport photos from a company that understands the strict rules involved. The photos should be of high quality and the correct size.

Step 4

The next step is to confirm the fee that is required to process your request of changing your name on your Indian passport. You can use money orders or certified checks to pay for the passport processing and postage. It is important that you confirm if the method you use to pay for the process is acceptable by the Indian embassy. Once this is done, you can mail the forms to the address on the forms you filled in. Use certified and insured mail to send your forms and documents. Once you receive your new passport, ensure that it has no mistakes. You should remember that passport name changing takes a while to be completed. You should therefore consider doing it before making any traveling plans.

    Hi,

My middle name is missing in my passport issued in 2008 from Ghaziabad. It is a mistake by the passport office. How can I get a correction in my name?? Should I apply for reissue my passport??

    Thanks

The name appears on my passport

First/Given Name: Mohammad Alfateh Family Name:

I want to correct it to First Name: Mohammad Family Name: Alfateh

because the US and Canada Consulate don’t accept blank in Family name or else they put the first name in Family name. I lived in the UK for 5 years and I had the same problems, but Unlike US/Canada the laws not so strict, so I used to write my First name as Mohammad and Family name as Alfateh

Please advise how can I change it!
