Recently I published an advertisement in the newspaper regarding change of my name. I’m writing this article to provide you with a sample newspaper ad that you can use as your template for newspaper advertisement.
Changing your name is a very complicated process. Well, that’s what most of you think. The fact is it is not as complicated as you think it is. If you know what are the steps you should follow while changing your name then it is just a matter of time. You should be aware that there are formalities which you should adhere. Conforming to the formalities and legalities involved is important to ensure that you do not miss anything, that will linger the process. It is hence best to get legal help and make your process seamless.
An important legal step in the process is publishing an advertisement in the newspaper, declaring that you are changing your name. It not only makes others aware that you are changing your name, but then in the future, you can counter any legal issues arising out of your name change. The advertisement shows that you had no mal intentions in changing your name.
Just changing your name legally is not enough; you have to declare it in the newspaper. Go to the local press and get a standard format from them and fill it with necessary details or you can write a statement of your own stating your old name and the new name. The most common way of giving an ad in the newspaper is –
“I have changed my name from xxxxxxx (your old name) to xxxxxxx (your new name) as per your local gazette. (E.g. Maharashtra Gazette).”
As far as the cost of the advertisement is concerned you don’t have to worry at all because it really comes cheap. If you want it to be published in 2 newspapers your cost would come around Rs180/- to Rs 1000/- . It is a standard norm to give it in 2 local newspapers so that it reaches maximum people. Another advantage of publishing in local newspapers all will know about your name change.
Different newspapers have different booking rates like, The Times of India-Kolkata edition – 600/-, Bartaman-Kolkata edition – 600/-, Hindustan Times-Kolkata edition – 500/- and so on. The cost of advertising in ‘The Time of India’ is 600/- for every five 5 lines and if you think it is too much then you can opt for ‘Aajkaal’ where the cost is 200/- for every 15 lines; it totally depends upon your budget. Below is given a sample of the newspaper advertisement about changing your name.
I, VINAY KUMAR, S/o of Dinesh Singh R/o Flat no 401, Plot no 6-A, Galaxy Residency, Sector-19,
Gurgaon, New Delhi, have changed my name from (old name) to (new name).
If you are giving it in any local newspaper you can use your native language. Are you wondering how to book a newspaper and publish an ad in it? Well here the steps which can follow-
1. Go to releaseMyAd.com , choose the category as Announcement and sub category as Change of Name. Select the newspaper you want to publish in.
2. Compose the matter of your ad .
3. Select the date of release of the ad and pay the charge through net banking or through cheque in ICICI bank or any other bank.

1. Go to you local Notary and make an affidavit regarding change of your name. Submit it in your respective District Court before a Magistrate or Notary Public. The Affidavit must mention the current name and the desired new name, and may mention in brief the reason for name change.
2. Please give advertisement in newspaper only after this (with due reference of notary#).
